Genshin Impact Pity Calculator
Pity is just arithmetic once you separate two different counters: pulls since your last 5-star, and whether the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the featured character. This tool does that arithmetic with the official rates.
Two counters, not one
Almost every confusing question about Genshin pity comes from mixing up two separate things that both look like “pity”:
- The pity counter — how many pulls you have made since your last 5-star. It rises by one per pull and resets the moment a 5-star appears. At the hard pity threshold it forces a 5-star.
- The guarantee flag — on a character event wish, the first 5-star has a 50% chance of being the featured character. If it is not, your next 5-star is guaranteed to be featured. That flag has nothing to do with the counter.
So “90 pulls” is only the answer to “how do I get a 5-star”. If you want this featured character and you are on the 50/50, the honest number is up to 180 pulls.
Why the worst case is 180, not 90
Walk through the bad branch. You are at 0 pity with no guarantee. You pull until a 5-star appears — at worst on pull 90. That 5-star has a 50% chance to be a standard character rather than the featured one. If you lose that toss, the guarantee flag flips, and the featured character is now guaranteed on your next 5-star — which is, again, at worst 90 pulls away. 90 + 90 = 180.
180 pulls is 28,800 primogems. That is the number to plan against if the character matters to you and you cannot accept missing them, because “expected value” arguments only work across many players, not across your one account.
The official numbers this page uses
| Banner | Base 5★ rate | Hard pity | Featured guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Character Event Wish | 0.6% | 90 pulls | 50% first, then guaranteed |
| Weapon Event Wish | 0.7% | 80 pulls | 75% first, path system available |
All four figures come from the in-game Wish → Details panel rather than from a third-party database, and they are what this calculator computes with. The 4-star guarantee is every 10 pulls on both banner types.
Primogems, fates and the 160 conversion
One Intertwined Fate costs 160 primogems, which gives the only conversion you need:
- 10 pulls = 1,600 primogems
- 90 pulls = 14,400 primogems
- 180 pulls = 28,800 primogems
Fates you already hold are pulls in the bank, so this tool counts them first and only converts the shortfall. If you are saving for a specific character, the useful habit is to track “pulls until hard pity, plus 90” rather than tracking your primogem balance, because the first number is what actually decides whether you can guarantee the character.
What carries over, and what does not
- Carries: the pity counter and the guarantee flag move between banners of the same type. Pulls on one character banner count towards the next character banner.
- Does not carry: character pity does not become weapon pity, and vice versa. The two counters are entirely separate, which is why people who split their pulls between banners end up further from both guarantees than they expect.
- The guarantee flag survives a banner ending. Losing a 50/50 and then not pulling until the next character banner still leaves you guaranteed — the flag is attached to your account, not to the banner.
Worked example: four positions people are actually in
These are the four states that cover almost every real question. All assume the character banner (hard pity 90).
| Situation | Pulls to first 5★ | Worst case for the featured character | Primogems if starting from zero |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 pity, no guarantee | 90 | 180 pulls | 28,800 |
| 0 pity, guaranteed | 90 | 90 pulls | 14,400 |
| 70 pity, no guarantee | 20 | 110 pulls | 17,600 |
| 70 pity, guaranteed | 20 | 20 pulls | 3,200 |
The last row is the one worth understanding: being 20 pulls from a guaranteed featured character is worth more than 8,000 primogems in the bank, because primogems still have to survive the 50/50. Pity and guarantee are assets, and they are the reason two players with identical primogem balances are not in the same position at all.
The 4-star counter is a separate, parallel clock
A 4-star is guaranteed within every 10 pulls, and that counter runs independently of the 5-star counter. A 4-star appearing does not reset your 5-star pity, and a 5-star appearing does not reset the 4-star counter in a way that costs you anything.
This matters for one practical reason: people count “pulls since my last 4-star” and then panic when the 5-star maths does not match. If you are planning for a 5-star, ignore the 4-stars entirely — they consume pulls, but they leave the 5-star arithmetic untouched.
Weapon banner: the fate point system changes the worst case
The weapon banner uses the same idea with different numbers, plus a mechanism the character banner does not have — Epitomized Path. You choose a target weapon, and every 5-star you receive that is not that weapon adds one fate point. At two fate points, the next 5-star is guaranteed to be the weapon you chose.
That makes the true worst case for a specific weapon:
- 80 pulls → first 5★ (wrong weapon) → 1 fate point
- 80 pulls → second 5★ (wrong weapon) → 2 fate points
- 80 pulls → third 5★, guaranteed to be your target
240 pulls in total, or 38,400 primogems. That is more than the character banner's 180-pull worst case, which is why “weapons are cheaper because pity is 80” is a bad rule of thumb.
How to track pity without losing count
The in-game wish history records every pull, but it is paginated and slow to read, so most players track it by hand. Three rules keep the numbers honest:
- Write down the pull number when a 5-star appears, not just the date. That single number is your new pity count.
- Record whether that 5-star was featured or standard. This is your guarantee flag, and it is the value people most often guess wrong.
- Remember the flag belongs to your account, not the banner. Losing a 50/50 and then skipping three banners still leaves you guaranteed on the fourth.
If you only ever note one thing, note the guarantee flag. A wrong pity count costs you at most a few pulls of planning; a wrong guarantee flag changes the worst case by a full 90 pulls.
The mistakes that actually cost pulls
- Counting 4-stars as pity. They are a separate counter. Mixing them inflates your pity count and makes you think you are closer than you are.
- Assuming the guarantee resets when a banner ends. It does not. Character pity and the guarantee flag both carry into the next character banner.
- Using 90 as the weapon banner's hard pity. It is 80, and the fate point system makes the worst case longer, not shorter.
- Planning around soft pity. It is a community observation, not a published rate. Budgeting on it means budgeting on a number the game does not promise.
- Mixing the two counters' totals. Character and weapon pity never combine. Pulls spent on one do nothing for the other.
Frequently asked questions
Does pity reset if I stop pulling?
No. The counter only moves when you pull. Stopping for a month changes nothing — you resume at exactly the same pity count and the same guarantee state.
Can I be at 90 pity and still not get a 5★?
No. Hard pity means a 5★ is guaranteed by the 90th pull on the character banner (80th on the weapon banner). If you believe you are past it and got nothing, the counter was reset by a 5-star you overlooked — typically a weapon or a standard 5-star pull you did not count.
Does the 4-star counter matter for 5-star planning?
Only indirectly. The two counters run in parallel, so a 4-star does not disturb your 5-star pity. If you are saving, ignore the 4-stars entirely — they cost pulls but do not change the 5-star arithmetic.
Is it better to pull for constellations or a new character?
That is a value judgement, not arithmetic, so this page will not pretend otherwise. What the maths can tell you is the cost: each additional copy of a featured character is another 90–180 pulls unless your guarantee flag happens to be set.
